Here are some fun and helpful tips to create a nutritious breakfast for you young ones at home! With the start of the school year less than a month away, it's a great time to establish some new, healthy habit for your family. While it may seem like mornings are too hectic for a sit-down breakfast as a family, there are some ways that you can bring breakfast back in a fun atmosphere that encourages your kids to start the day off right!
Try one of these five quick ways to bring back the family breakfast hour:
Prepare, prepare, prepare!
Busy mornings become a breeze when you take a few mintues the night before to set the scene for success. Lie out clothes, get backpacks loaded and by the door, and even set out your breakfast dishes on the counter or table so they are ready for you. The fewer little things you have to do in the morning, the easier it is to have a sit-down breakfast. Some breakfasts can even be prepped the night before. Try a 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats, a tablespoon each of raisins and chopped walnuts, a quarter of an apple chopped up, and some cinnamon. Place the ingredients in a bowl, stash it in the fridge, and in the morning all you need to do is add 1/2 cup of water and microwave it.
Give yourself time.
Setting your alarm for just 10 to minutes earlier can give you enough wiggle room to get everyone sitting down for even five minutes to eat breakfast. Low-fat plain yogurt with frozen blueberries and a granola bar is fast, filling, and nutritious, and having a good breakfast waiting for them can entire those sleepyheads out of bed so those 15 minutes turn into quality time before everyone heads to their day's destination.
Set some ground rules.
If time is an issue, but you want everyone to make eye contact at least once before leaving the house, set some guidelines for how breakfast is going to go down. Consider skipping television and video games in the morning and make breakfast about eating rather than checking the news, social media, or the weather. You may find that you enjoy the morning more without these attention grabbers!
Who says breakfast has to be breakfast food? Kids can have a healthy start to the day eating leftovers from last night, and everyone doesn't have to eat the same thing. But. it is helpful to have a plan. Decide the night before what breakfast will be and stick to it. Choose one day a week to be Wacky Breakfast day and make it an event to anticipate.
